Salt
Salt for feeding of horses
Salt consists of sodium and chloride, which are vital for the horse's salt balance. Horses source of salt is through the feed, as roughage generally contains low levels of sodium, salt needs to be given as a supplement in the daily feed ration. The need for salt increases during the hot months and when the horse loses a lot of fluid in the form of sweat or loose stools. Salt deficiency can lead to a reduced water intake, which can give rise to a number of problems, including colic.
